An Update on Video-to-Audio Conversion on Smule
At Smule, we’re constantly inspired by the creativity and passion shared by our community from every corner of the globe. Every note sung, every duet joined, and every performance captured adds to the vibrant, thriving platform we all enjoy. Over the years, your incredible creativity has filled our community with billions of performances, which is amazing. As Smule continues to grow, we want to make sure the system stays healthy and sustainable so we can keep bringing you the best music-making experience possible.
What’s Happening
Starting in early February, we’ll begin a phased update to manage some older video content. This cleanup is part of how we care for the platform as it evolves, helping Smule run smoothly, keeping content fresh, and making room for new voices, collaborations, and future musical moments.
As part of this process, we’ll begin converting certain older video recordings with little to no recent engagement from free, inactive accounts into audio-only recordings. This means the video portion will be removed, but the audio will remain available. A thumbnail will appear in place of the video so you can still see the moment captured in your performance. Once a video asset is converted and removed, it cannot be restored.
Keeping Your Videos Safe
VIP members’ videos are fully protected and will not be affected, regardless of activity or engagement. If you’re not a VIP member and want to make sure your videos are preserved, upgrading to VIP is the most reliable way to safeguard your recordings. Going VIP also unlocks the full Smule experience: sing freely, go solo, create duets and group performances, explore 15M+ songs, personalize your profile, and more.
Looking Ahead
We aim to complete this process by mid-March. While changes like this can feel significant, they help Smule continue evolving: improving audio and video quality, supporting future growth, and delivering a seamless experience for everyone. Our goal is to balance care for the music already created with space for the music still waiting to be made.
Your voices are the heart of Smule, and we’re grateful for every performance shared. Thank you for your creativity, your collaboration, and trust as we take these steps to keep Smule a lively, welcoming home for music.
