Update on Smule’s Content Storage

With the new year right around the corner, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible 15-year legacy of our platform. We’re humbled and honored by the diverse set of voices shared on Smule from every corner of the world. We understand how unique it is to have a thriving community more than a decade later, and we’re excited for what’s to come. In the spirit of evolution and growth, we recognize now is the time for some storage cleanup, and we have to make space for future collaboration and musical creation.

Over time, the volume of our user-generated content has grown significantly, and our storage capacity is under substantial pressure. We face challenges due to storage constraints, and we need to make changes to ensure the sustainability of our platform. These changes, which will begin in early January 2024, will also allow us to continue investing in and adapting new technology, such as improved audio and video quality, and other enhancements that will elevate your Smule experience.

Key Changes and Solutions

Impacted Users

These changes will impact users who are using Smule for free and have been inactive for more than one year. Any content that may be removed from these inactive accounts will also not have been listened to or joined by any Smule user over the last year. Our current VIP users’ content will not be removed, regardless of whether there has been any recent activity around this content. If you are a non-VIP user and want to preserve your existing recordings, we encourage you to consider upgrading to VIP before January 2024. In addition to saving your content, you’ll also gain access to a range of features, including unlimited solos, the ability to start your own duet and group recordings, full songbook access, no ads, and profile customizations that enhance your Smule experience.

Impacted Content

We understand the value of your time, creativity, and the effort you put into creating meaningful performances on our platform. In an effort to limit disruption to the Smule community, we’ll carefully review content for removal. Our team is only considering solos and duets at this time; group joins are not being considered for removal. The recordings that are subject to removal will include recordings that have not received any interactions, such as joins or listens, in the past year or more. This allows us to maintain fresh, engaging content, while preserving your most cherished performances.
