Q: I usually get positive feedback on my performance, but sometimes people can say hurtful comments. How should I respond?

The number of negative comments directly correlates to the size of a growing community. Trolls go to where the people are – and sometimes those comments can hurt. Let’s be honest, in this day and age – it’s easier for people to state their opinion behind a computer screen or an app than say anything in real person. Our Smule Inspire Team talks about the best way to handle this.

I’d say this. Sometimes it’s better to say nothing at all. The negative things are said to get a reaction from you, walking away can be hard sometimes but I’ve learned it’s the best for me. Know you find joy in what you do and dust your shoulders off. Plus SMULE is mostly positive energy so people stick up for you when you least expect it.😍” — Lolosingss

Lo is absolutely right. If you ignore the negative comments they will get bored and move on to someone that will give the reaction they are looking for. Don’t let anyone dim your light!” –Shane_TV

“People who are hurtful, i delete & block. Because this should not be in Smule. Everyone is there to have fun & yes there are people with better voices & some who don’t sing very well, but everyone has a unique voice & singing makes people usually happy or emotional. So it’s nobody’s business to judge others in a bad way!!” –Angels_Nadine

“Yes I thank them for listening and offer a friendly reminder to stay positive. Lots of those individuals just want attention and after I respond to stay positive they follow or join me, go figure!” – JeffreyAKG_TV
I agree with Lo. Not acknowledging the hurtful comments has a lot of power. Most importantly, it takes away power from the person saying hurtful things. If you do feel the need to respond, kill them with kindness! A good option would be something like “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that! Thank you for taking the time to listen 🙂” –Annah_TV
